What happens when I get to Waterloo?
If you're travelling on the Eurostar from Waterloo International, you must check-in no later than 30 minutes before departure.
How will I meet the rest of the group?
If you're meeting The Chain Gang at the designated train station, a Chain Gang representative will be easily identifiable when you get off the train. If you're joining the tour at the first hotel, the hotel will be expecting you and we'll contact you in person at the hotel.
If I drive, where can I leave my car?
At the first hotel. Please make sure you ask The Chain Gang for a map with directions to the first hotel.
What happens if I miss the train? Can I get the next one?
If you do miss the train, try and arrange to get on the next one. If you have to pay for another ticket you are responsible for the cost; depending on circumstances , you may be covered by insurance. Please call the owner of the first hotel - you will have a list of all the hotels as well as contact details for the outbound journey as part of your pre-departure pack. The Chain Gang will arrange transfers from the train station at the later time.
How big is the group?
The maximum size is fifteen people and one, sometimes two guides. A profile of people who go on the tour is best explained by advertisement placement, e.g. leading national newspapers, Private Eye, Time Out, Cycle Touring magazines and professional journals such as the British Medical Journal. There is usually a mix of people travelling singly and people travelling in couples.
Do I have to carry my clothes or are they transported from/to each hotel daily?
All your luggage is transported for you from each hotel to the next.
Can I take my own bike?
Yes, if you can figure out a way to get it down there.
Are helmets provided, and what sort of clothes should I bring?
Helmets are not obligatory in France, but we recommend that you wear one. To be sure of comfort we suggest you bring your own helmet, but in the event that you need a helmet on the day we will make one available. Waterproof jackets are supplied. Bring several pairs of shorts and T-shirts. Training shoes are fine for this level of cycling. Padded cycling shorts and cycling gloves are valuable and swim wear may be useful. Casual clothes for evening. You may be grateful for something warm with long sleeves.
Do I need to bring a towel, soap, etc.?
No, towels and soap are provided by hotels but personal toiletries are not always supplied. You may want a towel for swimming during the day.
Do I need suntan lotion and sunglasses?
Yes, there is a risk of sunburn especially on the knees and lower arms.
Do I have to be really fit to join this tour?
This tour is designed for people with only a reasonable level of fitness. People who are unfit can complete the tour, but they don't enjoy the hills quite as much!
What happens if I'm ill?
It is possible to transport you to the next hotel during the day. If seriously ill, appropriate arrangements will be made.
What if I have any special dietary requirements?
Vegetarians are catered for (please advise if you eat fish). Vegans choice will be limited, but they can be accommodated. Allergies such as wheat or dairy products can also be catered for, but please give us advance notice.
Is the water safe to drink?
Yes, it is important to drink plenty of non-alcoholic fluid each day.
Will I need any Euro on arrival in France or Italy?
Handy for refreshments on the TGV and Eurostar, but you'll find plenty of banks en route during the week. French cash machines will generally accept overseas credit cards.
Are there any additional costs, such as departure taxes, tolls, local guide payments, etc.?
No, everything stated is included in the price.
Will it be possible to do any washing?
Yes, hotels are able to assist with this delightful chore.
Are beverages included with the meals?
No, all beverages are to your own account.
